  • Annual General Meeting 2024, Ballygar Carnival – The AGM of Ballygar Carnival will take place on Saturday, November 9th at 8:15pm in the Mattie McDonagh Centre, Ballygar. All are welcome to attend. Your support would be greatly appreciated as we begin preparations for the 81st carnival.
  • Ballygar Community Playschool – hold their annual Halloween Disco on Friday the 25th October from 6pm to 8m in Fallons, Ballygar.  Cost per child is €5 and everyone is welcome.

  • Johnstons Pharmacy – Christmas Shoebox Appeal – Once again, we are delighted to be a drop off point for the shoebox appeal – leaflets can be collected instore and completed boxes can be dropped into the pharmacy by 10th November. Make a child smile this Christmas by gifting them a shoebox packed full of toys, books, hats & scarves, all the things we take for granted in our lives. Your shoebox will be given to children affected by poverty in countries in Africa and Eastern Europe.
  • Ballygar Truckin – Following on from the huge support we received for last year’s event, raising over €40,000 for BNT Le Chéile and Roscommon Hospice we are delighted that this year’s fun filled event is back over the October Bank Holiday Weekend, from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th October, in Ballygar.  We will be hosting a Truck & Tractor Run, Monster Auction, Vintage Display & Farmer’s Market, with Bingo Loco, The Conquerors celebrating 30th Year of St Brendan’s LGFC, and Paul Kelly all live in the Mattie McDonagh Centre and there will be many more family fun activities happening throughout the weekend.  This year, we have chosen to fundraise for: BNT Le Chéile and St Anne’s Stroke & Brain Injury Unit, UHG.  It is Ballygar Truckin’s aim to help raise vital funds to help both causes to continue the real and necessary care and support they provide to members of our community.  If you require any further information relating to this event and ways to donate, please see our Social Media pages or contact any member of the committee.

  • Welcome To The Family” – Exploring the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation – series of talks by Fr. Eugene Duffy exploring the meaning and importance of the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. The talks will take place on Monday evenings from Monday 7th October to Monday 2nd December from 8pm to 9.15pm at the Prayer Centre, Knock Shrine.   • Visit of the Relics of St Bernadette  The relics will arrive at Knock Basilica on Sunday 29th September at 11.30am and will be present at both the 12 noon and 3pm Masses. Veneration will take place after the 12 noon Mass until 2pm. The relics of St Bernadette will journey on pilgrimage to Ireland for the very first time, visiting every diocese in the country.   • Time for Creation – From September 1st until October 4th the Christian Church throughout the world celebrates the Time for Creation.  The Time for Creation is linked with the concern for creation in the Eastern and the Western traditions of Christianity, respectively.  It is a time when we are asked by Pope Francis to become more aware of the beauty of the natural world around us.  Please see our sacred space, in celebration of this time, in the sanctuary of our Church.

The box, containing the names of the deceased, will be taken to the altar for remembrance at this special mass on the 28th September next.

  • Visit of the Relics of St Bernadette  In September and October this year, the relics of St Bernadette will journey on pilgrimage to Ireland for the very first time, visiting every diocese in the country.   • The Legion of Mary are having a recruitment drive in the parish this weekend, 21st and 22nd September.  A member will speak at Masses in Ballygar, Newbridge and Toghergar Churches and it is hoped to do house to house visitation in Ballygar on Sunday.  The Legion of Mary will hold an information evening on Tuesday 24th September at 8pm in the Courthouse, Ballygar.  All welcome.
  • Time for Creation – From September 1st until October 4th the Christian Church throughout the world celebrates the Time for Creation.  The Time for Creation is linked with the concern for creation in the Eastern and the Western traditions of Christianity, respectively.  It is a time when we are asked by Pope Francis to become more aware of the beauty of the natural world around us.  Please see our sacred space, in celebration of this time, in the sanctuary of our Church.

  • Killyan Graveyard Committee would like to sincerely thank all who turned out in huge numbers for our annual Graveyard Mass on Sunday.  Thanks to Fr. Tommy, Fr. Louis, Fr. Douglas and Fr. Michael O’Brien for celebrating Mass. Thank you to our wonderful Sarah for her beautiful music, to our servers Chloe and Cathal, the Eucharistic Ministers and our zoom hosts, Caragh and Derek and to everyone involved in the liturgy.  Thanks to everyone who worked hard in the weeks leading up to the Mass to ensure that the Graveyards were looking their best. Thanks to the Vintage Club for the loan of the marquee and to those who helped to erect it. Thanks to Garda Pat Regan for help with traffic.  Thanks to everyone for their generosity on the day. A total of €2066 was collected which paid for the sound system for the day and will help towards the maintenance of the Graveyards during the year. May all our loved ones rest in peace.

  • Ballygar Heritage Week 2024 – As part of Heritage Week, Ballygar Tidy Towns will host a Talk/Question and Answer Session at the Orchard Walls of Aghrane Estate this Sunday, August 25th. The talk will be presented by Conservation Archaeologist Frank Coyne from 2pm to 4pm. Enter the forest via car at the first entrance on the Tullyroe Road at Pat Joe Scanlon’s. Frank will speak about the Conservation and Management Plan that is underway to conserve and protect the orchard wall at the castle grounds. All are welcome and your support would be greatly appreciated.

  • Castleblakeney Heritage and Summer Festival is being held from the 23rd to 25th of August kicking off with an opening ceremony in the Heritage Centre at 6.30pm and a traditional music Céilí in Nolans Bar from 9pm on Friday.  Saturday’s events include an u12s football blitz and kids sports day in the afternoon with music from 8pm in Gerry Macs Bar that evening.  Sunday kicks off with a fun run at 10am (registration from 9.30am), a Heritage Fair from noon to 4pm, a heritage sports day, with tug of war and horse shoe throwing amongst others and live music to close the weekend with the CDs band and traditional session after in Nolans bar.  Local history presentations will be held in the Heritage Centre throughout the weekend.  Check out our Facebook page Castleblakeney Development Association for details.

  • Celebration of Mass in Ballygar Cemetery – Mass will be celebrated in Ballygar Cemetery on Sunday, August 11th.
  • Many thanks to all who turned up last Saturday for the cemetery cleanup. In preparation for the cemetery Mass on Sunday August 11, there will be another cleanup on Saturday August 10, starting at 11 a.m. Our cemetery is a sacred space in our community and it is hoped that all who can will lend a hand. Meantime families are asked to attend to family graves and where possible do a little extra.
  • Killyan Graveyard Mass will be held on Sunday 18 August at 11.30 am.  We will have a general clean-up, Friday 2nd at 7 pm, Tuesday 6th at 7 pm.  Please make a special effort to help if you have loved ones buried in old graveyard as it needs a lot of work.  When you are tiding your own family graves please tidy pathways nearby.  Please help us to keep our Graveyard in the best possible condition in honour of all our loved ones who have been laid to rest there.
  • Ballygar Tidy Towns – will have a cake sale, tea room and information stall at the Fair Day Monday 5th August from 10am. We would appreciate any home baking which can be dropped to the Courthouse on Sunday evening 7pm to 9pm or Sunday morning from 9.30pm onwards. Your support would be appreciated.

  • Pioneer Pilgrimage to Knock – The Pioneer Pilgrimage to Knock will take place on Sunday 21 July. Mass at 3pm will be followed by Eucharistic Blessing and Procession to the Shrine. Pioneers along with friends and relations of people who are living “one day at a time” with addiction are welcome.

  • Reek Sunday 2024 – Sunday 28 July The annual national pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick ‘Reek Sunday’ takes place on Sunday 28 July.  Mass will be celebrated on the summit of the mountain on the hour with the first Mass at 8:00am and the last Mass at 2:00pm. Confessions will be available on the summit from 7:30am to 2:00pm.  
  • Celebration of Mass in Ballygar Cemetery – Mass will be celebrated in Ballygar Cemetery on Sunday, August 11th. Church gate collection for cemetery upkeep will take place that weekend also.
  • 6k Fun Walk/Run in Newbridge Sunday 21st July in Aid of the Special Care Baby Unit Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe and the CardiacWard and Parent’s Accommodation in Crumlin’s Children Hospital Dublin. Registration from 12.30pm. Walk at 1pm. Refreshments and Spot prizes in The Shiven Inn after.
