Martin’s Bar Na d’Taoisigh

Martin’s Bar na d’Taoisigh ‘The oldest pub in town’ was established around 1830 by John Martin, great, great grandfather of the current proprietor Pat Gilmore. Martin’s prides itself on its family atmosphere and a place for one and all to come and chat. Pat is a keen local historian and the pub is a first stop for many coming home to ‘find their roots’. The pub has been in the same family since its establishment and Pat has inherited many of the stories passed down through the generations.

In 1995 Martin’s Bar took the name ‘Bar na d’Taoisigh’ when they were gifted an exhibition of portraits of the Taoisigh (Prime Ministers) of Ireland since the foundation of the state. The exhibition was gifted by the British Trade Union, the GMB, to mark the massive contribution made by Irish emigrant workers to the development of the Trade Union movement in Britain; and the pub has been visited by several Taoisigh.

Whether you come for the history, politics or just the craic, Martin’s is an essential stop for any visitor to Ballygar, where you’ll receive the warmest greetings from Pat and his wife Carmel.
